The 2016 Endurance Mountain Bike Season

It may feel like the mountain bike race season is winding down in Arkansas with the end of the Arkansas Mountain Bike Championship Series (AMBCS) at  the Attila the Hun race in Hot Springs last month. Serious competitors know better. The next three months will be spent preparing  for the start of the Arkansas Marathon Mountain Bike Series in March. Others of course will take it easy for a while … [Read more...]

Cane Creek Timberland Mountain Bike Race

Cane Creek State Park held the third Cane Creek Timberland Mountain Bike Race on Saturday, June, 27, 2015. After having been moved from earlier in May due to thunderstorms, the race had rain once again to contend with. Three-quarters of an inch of rain fell on the course overnight and raised fears that the course would be muddy, but the course withstood the rain and the race went on as planned. … [Read more...]

Iron Mountain Saves the Day

The Riverside Classic Mountain Bike Race has taken place in the middle of Summer at Burns Park in North Little Rock for years. A 5 mile to 7 mile course that takes riders over rocky terrain, steep climbs and fast downhill sections but has always been a hot race. The Festival at Townsend’s Ridge

I arrived late, the closure of the Pig Trail- highway 23, due to a washout caused me to take the long way to the park on the south shore of Beaver Lake. As I pulled into the Townsend Ridge parking lot, I quickly got my bike off the truck and got checked in. I rolled up to the start line with minutes to spare. I still had time to notice that the category 3 50+ group was the largest I'd ever raced … [Read more...]

Why – The Inaugural Mountain View Epic

I was thinking, since the Mountain View Epic is the only race in Arkansas I know that has “Epic” in the race title, I have to do this story on “What is Epic?” …and why is the most demanding mountain bike race in the state deserving of this title?  That was the plan, and then the race began… It was the inaugural event, the very first one put on by the famous Frank Webber and his amazing sidekick … [Read more...]

Challenges of Epic Proportions (Part 2 – The Race)

(Part 1 is here) Cyclists were already milling around in front of the Stone County Courthouse on the Mountain View town square, nervously making last minute adjustments to their bikes, packing drop bags for various aid stations and sizing up the competition. I noticed a few full rigid, single speed bikes and thought to myself, life is just not hard enough for some people. After looking over the … [Read more...]

Challenges of Epic Proportions (Part 1)

Being a race organizer is a tough thing; dealing with permitting, aid station logistics, publicity, sponsors and volunteers. This past weekend Sarah and Frank Webber pulled off all of that and a little extra...okay, a whole lot extra, with the Mountain View Epic. For their first time directing a large, regional event, they challenged themselves with holding a mountain bike race on one of the most … [Read more...]

Iron Mountain, You’ve Gotta Be Handy with the Wheel

The day started like most race mornings, very early, holding a hot cup of coffee and wondering why in the hell I'm doing this. Then, as most do for an out of town race, we all met up in a parking lot to carpool. After a quick exchange of hellos and good mornings, we began loading up our bikes and gear to begin our journey southwest towards Arkadelphia’s Iron Mountain. The race was originally … [Read more...]

The tentative schedule is out for the 2015 Arkansas Mountain Bike Championship Series (AMBCS). Race directors will be meeting later this month to finalize things.
