Floating in the Drought

Much of Arkansas is currently under sever/extreme drought conditions. It hasn't rain much here all summer. Every time we get a few drops Facebook lights up with tongue-in-cheek questions about what is falling from the sky. If you are a kayaker, it's been a disappointing Summer for floating. Or has it? We've been wanting to do some floating this summer and to hear much of the media talk, … [Read more...]

School of Recreational Paddling

(Get signed up for the 2015 River Paddling School) The Arkansas Canoe Club is about forty years old, and they've organized training weekends for thirty-seven of those years - Canoe School evolved into Whitewater School, and then about ten years ago they began offering a Recreational School as well.  That experience shows in the really good programs the club puts together.  Those good at … [Read more...]

The History of Memory

"Sooner or later we all discover that the important moments in life are not the advertised ones, not the birthdays, the graduations, the weddings, not the great goals achieved. The real milestones are less prepossessing. They come to the door of memory." Susan B. Anthony Textbooks are filled with their accomplishments. Here Comes the Sun

The weather today in much of the Natural State is not sunny. In fact, most of us are seeing some kind of frozen or freezing precipitation. This is probably great news for the LR Marathon Training Group. How tough is it to get out of a … [Read more...]

They are hosting a "First Day Hike" program in many of the parks on New Year's Day. Here is a portion of the news release they sent out: Arkansas State Parks Joins This Nationwide Invitation to Begin the New Year … [Read more...]

If you can’t decide…

...do it all. I really enjoy cycling, but I also enjoy swimming (the "sport" of my youth) and hiking and orienteering and paddling and sometimes even running. I also enjoy competition so how do I choose what kind of event to focus on? Well, luckily, I don't have to. Arkansas is a wonderful place to participate in multi-sport competitions. The obvious multi-sport event is the triathlon. Varying … [Read more...]

But Mom, it’s HOT outside!

“Nobody ever drowned in his own sweat.” That has been quoted so many times, from Ann Landers to Lou Holtz, I have no idea whom to credit. But I think it’s appropriate for the story of a late summer camping trip at the lake. With temperatures in the upper 90s to triple digits and high humidity, it’s a perfect time to go camping for a family reunion. Right? While July is always a “hot” month … [Read more...]

What to do on a Saturday morning?

You know sometimes Little Rock is right over the top as far as outdoor stuff.  It never really gets the recognition that other cities and towns in Arkansas get as being a great outdoor town.  That surprises me particularly looking at what is available in the metro area.  Here is a short list: Over 60 miles of mountain bike trails. Yes that's right, over 60! In North Little Rock you have the … [Read more...]
