Resolve to be Involved

Welcome to 2012 everyone. I'm sure everyone has come up with resolutions by now. Most resolutions I've found are very personal. After doing some quick research online it seems that most resolutions involve  quitting something or getting something. This is certainly true of those of us who want to improve our health. We want to quit smoking or alcohol or eat less. Others want to be better at a … [Read more...]

Mount Nebo Trails – Part 2

You really should start with Part 1 ...Lunch was good and soon we were ready for round 2. Our plan was to head down the Rim Trail again but at Gum Springs we would head down to the Bench Trail, playing it by ear from there. The trailhead for the Gum Springs Trail is very close to our cabin. Another Civilian Conservation Corps trail, it heads down some wonderful switchbacks and under a … [Read more...]

Mount Nebo Trails – Part 1

Earlier in the year we booked a few days in a cabin at Mount Nebo State Park near Dardanelle, AR hoping to escape the Holiday mayhem. A couple of nights in a cabin and a full day of hiking all over the mountain would do us some good. Cabin 61 is an iconic overnight facility in the Arkansas State Park system. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930's, the beautiful rock work with … [Read more...]

Carrying on the Tradition

Well it was another Christmas Day with time saved for a little tradition that Lisa and I have, the Christmas hike. For some reason we often end up in a state park. Recent years have seen us taking our holiday hike at Pinnacle Mountain, Petit Jean, Lake Catherine and Lake Ouachita State Parks. For our trip this year we decided on Woolly Hollow State Park near Greenbrier, Arkansas. It's a beautiful … [Read more...]

They are hosting a "First Day Hike" program in many of the parks on New Year's Day. Here is a portion of the news release they sent out: Arkansas State Parks Joins This Nationwide Invitation to Begin the New Year … [Read more...]

Mount Nebo Bench Trail Run – Dec. 2011

At 6:33 this morning, after scraping the frost off the windshield, we pulled out of the driveway, headed for Dardanelle and Mt. Nebo State Park. This morning, runners gathered in the cold winter wind to brave a 4 mile run on the Bench Trail.  Arkansas Outside was going to shoot photos of the race and if AO guy is going somewhere I might as well tag along. But why just stand around? Why not join … [Read more...]

Raid The Rock 2011

UPDATE: Results are in for 2011 Raid the Rock. You can also get splits here. And if you're wondering where some of these teams came from check out this. By 2000 I'd done a couple of adventure races which at that time made me, in the minds of some, an old hand at it. I had orienteering skills, a hydration pack and a mountain bike. A new adventure race was coming down the pike and a friend … [Read more...]

Now This is Hiking Weather

I could never resist the call of the trail. - Buffalo Bill Time to check the hiking boots for dry rot, clean the cob webs out of the backpack, start planning some big hikes. But where to go? Arkansas has some of the best hiking in the country and the trails are not usually very crowded. The evening temps are starting to set up nicely to give us some good fall color (we could use a little rain if … [Read more...]
