Trail Conditions – How to find or share information

We love our trails in Arkansas, the proof is how much effort we put into taking care of them. Here is a list of Facebook groups and pages that trail advocacy groups use to report damage and list trail work days. This past weekend, Arkansas received a lot of rain in a short period of time leading to flooding damage, downed trees, and muddy trails. Please be aware of trail closures due to unsafe, … [Read more...]

Resolved to be Involved – 2016

Welcome to 2017 everyone. I'm sure everyone has come up with new year resolutions by now. After doing some quick research online it seems that most resolutions involve quitting something or getting something. This is certainly true of those of us who want to improve our health. We want to quit smoking or alcohol or eat less. Others want to be better at a physical activity like running and cycling. … [Read more...]

What a Year of Advocacy Can Do

It's been about a year. Central Arkansas Trail Alliance has been supporting trail access, building advocacy and maintaining local trails for about a year now as an organized group. So far CATA members have: Brought back the Boyle Park trails in Little Rock clearing trail corridors, rerouting poorly designed and worn out sections and building bridges to improve user experience. Performed … [Read more...]

A New Crop of Trail Stewards

It was going to be hot and I suspected that only a couple of us regulars would show up for the clean and ride. Clean and rides are what Central Arkansas Trail Alliance, a local International Mountain Bicycling Association chapter, call a trail work day. Usually, we show up, do some trail maintenance maybe a reroute or whatever is needed, then we have something to eat, maybe a quick beer to cut the … [Read more...]

Help Arrives for the Injured Epic

The Syllamo (S?l’-l?-m?) Mountain Bike Trail five miles north of Mountain View in Stone County, Arkansas, consists of a series of interconnecting loops offering mountain bikers, hikers and trail runners 50 miles of trail, most of it singletrack. The trail name dates back to an infamous resident of the area in the early 1800s, a Creek Indian named Syllamo who was tolerated by the native Shawnees. … [Read more...]

Trail Fairy: Like a Boss

As I stared deep into the tangled mass, I wondered if I had been miraculously shrunk down and what I was looking at was really the inside of a massive bird's nest. That's certainly what it looked like from my perspective: huge knots of wood and thick vine heaped at short intervals all along the path, taller and much wider than I am, it could only be that I was caught in a maze much like Alice. … [Read more...]

Filling My Bucket

Last February, Arkansas Outside contributor, Sarah Miller, wrote an article on trail karma for us. It was a excellent reminder that as trail users we all have a responsibility to help maintain the wonderful trails throughout our state. This Summer I began racing in the Arkansas Mountain Bike Championship Series for the first time. I did okay on my first race and was able to to finish all races so … [Read more...]

Fossil Flats Trail Repaired and Reopened!

The folks at Devil's Den State Park shared these photos of the work that has been done on the Fossil Flats Trail since the floods last spring wiped out a lot of it. They hired Progressive Trail Design to help with the effort and things are looking pretty good. The only thing missing from these photos are riders. When are you going? [slideshow] … [Read more...]
