ARK 5K Classic @ Crystal Hill Elementary
Aug 31 @ 7:30 am – 8:30 am
ARK 5K Classic @ Crystal Hill Elementary | North Little Rock | Arkansas | United States

Race History

The Arkansas Running Klub has held this 5K race in North Little Rock on Labor Day weekend dating back to 1982. In the early years, the race was known as the Twin City Bank (TCB) 5K and held in Burns Park. Martin Fulk and Diane Marshall won the inaugural running in 1982. Mike Clark set a then Burns Park course record in 1983, clocking a 15:15 finish. Diane Marshall won again in 1983 and 1984, setting the Burns Park female course record in ’84 with a 17:55 time.

The TCB 5K joined the Grand Prix Series in 1983 – the second year of operation for both the race and the Series. After a change in sponsorship, the race was known as the Mercantile Bank 5K from 1996 to 1999. In 2000, the race course moved out of Burns Park to the North Little Rock Riverfront/Argenta area. The name was also changed that year to the ARK Fast 5K – reflecting the new course’s flat topography. Minor tweaks in the course and name continued in the 00 decade as the race was subsequently known as the River Run 5K (2003), Riverfront 5K (2004-05, 2010) and the Clear Mountain 5K (2006-2009).

A source of stability amid the changes in name and course is the race’s affiliation with the Arkansas Grand Prix Series. The ARK 5K has remained part of the Series (always on Labor Day weekend) every year since 1983. Along with the Spa 10K which also joined in 1983, the ARK 5K has the longest run of any race with the Grand Prix Series. The race has often served as an Arkansas State Championship event and was selected as the RRCA National Championship 5K in 1987.

DIRECTIONS:  From I-430 take exit 12. Heading south on I-430 go left (east) on Crystal Hill then right on Northshore Drive. The Elementary School will be on the right hand side of the street.  Heading north on I-430 go right (east) on Crystal Hill Rd and right on Northshore Drive.

Minuteman 5K Cross Country Race hosted by the Little Rock Roadrunnners Club

MINUTEMAN CROSS COUNTRY 5K UPDATE!

The Minuteman Cross Country 5K will be held in a new location this year! Mark your calendars for September 7th at War Memorial Golf Course.

We were approached by Little Rock Parks and Recreation about using the golf course for our event. The course is maintained daily and should be a refreshing new venue!

The course is two loops and will be a great for viewing the runners. The start/finish is located just west of the intersection at Fair Park and Zoo Drive on a wide-open fairway (see the maps)

Parking will be on the north side of War Memorial Stadium. We will provide a spot for a drop bag if you need it.

In addition to the Grand Prix racers, the 2018 event had 39 high schools with almost a thousand students running. We encourage everyone – especially our Arkansas Running Clubs – to run the open, pitch a tent and stay to cheer on the kids & support your local schools!

Some runners find cross country running hard because of the terrain. The race will be run on grass and runners should know that War Memorial will have more hills.

Thanks for the continued support!

Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival

The Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival was created to bring together three Northwest Arkansas cross-country races under a single event. The Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival is now one of the premier running events in America.

Each year over 80 college teams and 120 high school teams battle for prestige and unique Chile Pepper themed awards. Additionally, 750 individuals participate in the Open 10k and 5K Fun Run plus the Tom Lewis 1 Mile Pepper Dash on Friday Night. The event is held at University of Arkansas’ incredible off road course and all runners are invited to enjoy a Hot Mexican food feast following the race.

In 2018, we had another successful year with nearly 6,500 registered athletes. The funds we raised allowed us to support even more high school cross country programs. Your participation contributed to the donation of $75,000 to area High School and Jr. High Cross Country programs this year.

White River 4 Miler @ Batesville City Hall
Oct 26 @ 7:30 am – 9:00 am
White River 4 Miler is the Grand Prix State Championship Race

2019 will be the 41st running of the White River 4 Mile Classic. For the first five years, the race was a 10K, originally called the White River Water Carnival 10K Classic and was won by Tom Aspel in each of its first three years. The switch to the 4 Mile distance came in 1984 due to the hot, humid August weather frequently encountered by runners in Arkansas. Over the years, the race has been won by Batesville native Brian Baker 8 times, and 6 times by Angie Herringer on the women’s side. Andy Buschman and Jack Heston have run in all 34 races from 1979 to 2012.

Course Description

The race begins on Main Street, between 9 th and 10 th Streets, and is downhill for about seven blocks.  Runners will then make a right turn on Bayou Street and continue downhill while crossing the Golden Overpass.  The route continues on Bayou Street with a couple of small, rolling hills until just past the one-mile mark.

Soon after passing this mark, runners will begin a gradual climb of approximately six-tenths of a mile up North Heights Street, followed by a right turn on Craig Street and a quick descent for about two-tenths of a mile.  The course then turns right on Hill Street, where runners will soon pass the half-way point.

The route continues on Hill Street for a relatively flat four-tenths of a mile before turning left on Carter Street, just past West Elementary School.  From Carter Street, runners will make a right turn onto Charles Street, which loops back around to Bayou Street.  After making a left turn on Bayou Street, runners will soon begin a steep climb to go back across the Golden Overpass and finish the third mile.

Just after the three-mile mark, the course makes a left turn onto Water Street and begins a gradual increase in elevation for approximately one-half of a mile.  Runners will then make a right turn onto 10 th Street for a quick climb before making a final right onto Main Street for a fast five blocks downhill to the finish.
