Talimena 13.1 Run & Relay @ Talimena Scenic Drive
Apr 11 all-day
Talimena 13.1 Run & Relay @ Talimena Scenic Drive | Mena | Arkansas | United States

The Talimena ½ Marathon Run & Relay is set for Saturday, April 11, 2015.

Events Include: 1/2 Marathon, 13 Person Relay, 4 Person Relay

This race formerly called the Rich Mountain Classic, was first run in 1986 and continued through 1990, using the Janssen Park to the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge race route. In 1991, the “Classic” was renamed the Talimena Drive ½ Marathon and was run from the lodge to near the state line and back. The Talimena Drive is called the “scenic drive” for a reason as the drive from Mena to the State Park and Lodge is beautiful with many breathtaking views and overlooks.

In 2014 this event was re-named the Talimena 13.1 Run & Relay.

It is noted that Governor Bill Clinton and Attorney General Steve Clark were past participants in the race.

The Queen Wilhelmina Lodge has a great history in our area. In the 1890’s, the KCP&G Railroad Company built a north-south railroad from Kansas City to Port Arthur Texas. While building the route through the Ouachita Mountains, a flat area atop of the 2,681-foot Rich Mountain was discovered, and Dutch investors were captivated by the beauty of this windswept mountain. The original lodge was constructed of native stone and timber at a cost of $100,000. The lodge was named for Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, and became known as the “castle in the sky.”

With financial trouble to the KCP&G Railroad, the lodge was abandoned within a few years, and fell upon disrepair. In 1957, a State Park was built at the same location, opening in 1963. In November 1973 the building was destroyed by fire, but the State Parks rebuilt the lodge. At the present time the lodge is undergoing major renovation, and will reopen in 2015.

Registration will be available through Runreg until 3-28-15.

Full mOOn 50K is the Ultra Trail Series 2014-2015 season kickoff race and a celebration event honoring birthdays of favorite AURA Queens.

The race is great for first-time trail and ultra runners, pavement pounders and PRs! The out-and-back course is set on rolling Forest Service Roads.
The run starts at Camp Ouachita Girl Scout Camp in the Ouachita National Forest. There are restrooms on site and showers at the campground nearby we have paid for your use. So plan to stick around for the after-party. This year, we’re serving breakfast just like the old days. But we’ll still have the regular goods and super cold watermelon for sure!

Bring your running family and friends. Spectators are welcome and will probably be recruited to volunteer! (See our volunteer page for opportunities). Please carpool if you can! Parking is limited to the west side of Highway 324. NO PARKING ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE ROAD. (The side closest to the camp is off limits.) NO EXCEPTIONS. The Forest Service is very serious about this and will ticket and/or tow your vehicle. Follow parking directors as you pull in. There is no fee for parking unless you decide to park on the wrong side of the road – the ticket is $240.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the party and for the run. They’ll need to wear something reflective and probably be able to run with you off leash (leash in the dark is a tripping hazard for inbound runners). Email the race director for more information.
