Lake Ouachita

The Big Run

Our good friends Sarah (standing near the tent) and Aaron invited Lisa (on the boat) and I to meet them at Lake Ouachita State Park near Hot Springs, AR on Sunday. Although we had a ton of stuff to do around the house we decided to take them up on it. As we were driving there in the morning Sarah called me and said they had rented a party barge from the park. I said, “Great!” She said, “Do you know how to drive one?” Oh Boy! I get to drive the boat!

We arrived at their tent site around 10:15 after a stop to get some food at Walmart. They are staying almost two weeks for vacation. One of the things they planned to do was to kayak to one of the many islands in the lake and camp one night. They wanted to check out the islands and find just the right one. We were also met by some of the friends of Sarah and Aarons and off we went. Lunch was fried chicken and chips and dip, ummmmmm. We had a total of three dogs with us and they provided entertainment throughout the day. After stopping at a couple of other islands we found a nice small one in the main channel that should serve the purpose. As it got late we needed to get the boat back to the park so off we went.

I highly recommend this park. The new campground is beautiful and the lake is one of the cleanest you’ll find. It will get busier as the season goes on but it is always worth a visit. You can also hike and mountain bike near the park so there is plenty to do.
